About the project
The Public Interest Law Alliance (PILA) is a project of the Free Legal Advice Centres (FLAC) which was established in 2009. The Alliance comprises individuals and organisations, both national and international, which recognise the important, though not exclusive, role that law can play to benefit marginalised and disadvantaged people. This includes community and independent law centres, non-governmental organisations, legal practitioners, students, academics and all those interested in seeing law work for marginalised and disadvantaged people.

Objectives
- To develop sustainable ways of matching expertise in the legal profession with legal need in NGOs and community and independent law centres;
- To increase the capacity of NGOs as to the use of law in their work;
- To raise awareness about and seek to overcome the barriers to public interest litigation;
- To promote awareness among lawyers, academics and law students of the value of their skills to organisations which aim to address challenges in areas such as housing, immigration, social welfare, debt, mental health, children's rights, prisoners' rights, Travellers' rights and many more;
- To provide through its website and educational seminars a forum for public interest law information, cases, strategies, discussion, resources and events.
