PILA organises legal education sessions through our pro bono referral scheme by matching the need staff of NGOs have with legal expertise on our lawyers' register. Legal education sessions are designed and organised following consultation with NGOs on what type of sessions they require and what specfic queries they would like answered.

Public Interest Law in Ireland

PILA organised a seminar on public interest law in Ireland where Colin Daly, Managing Solicitor at Northside Community Law Centre spoke about the different ways the law can be used in the public interest and how the law and the legal system could potentially assist NGOs and their clients. PILA organised a half day legal education session on social welfare law that dealt with the legislation and application of the habitual residence condition and the social welfare appeals process. Housing Law

PILA organised a full day legal education session on housing law that dealt with the rights of tenants in local authority housing; applying for housing; local authority obligations to house; anti-social behaviour; eviction procedure and the controversial Section 62 Notice to Quit and excluding orders. Mental Health Law

PILA organised two half day legal education sessions on mental health law that dealt with the Mental Health Act 2001, the admission procedure for involuntary patients, the law on capacity and consent and how this applies to the nursing home support scheme. Refugee and Asylum Law

PILA organised a half day legal education session on refugee and asylum law that dealt with grounds for claiming asylum, the asylum process including making applications to the Office of the Refugee Applications Commissioner (ORAC) and the Refugee Appeals Tribunal (RAT), the difference between refugee status and getting leave remain or subsidiary protection status and family reunification. Immigration Law

PILA organised a half day legal education session on immigration law that dealt with, among other things, visa types, their regulation & an explanation of administrative procedures, roles and responsibilities of different sections of government, naturalisation & citizenship, deportation orders, the rights of undocumented persons and regularisation of status. Refugee and Childcare Law

PILA organised a half day legal education session on refugee and childcare law that looked at the interface between refugee and childcare law as it relates to unaccompanied minors. It dealt with relevant sections of child care and refugee legislation as well as issues such as age assessment and legal protection for child victims and suspected victims of trafficking.
