A special bank account has been set up for European member states to voluntarily donate funds to the running of the European Court of Human Rights. The account is part of the follow-up to the High Level Conference on the Future of the European Court of Human Rights that was held in Brighton earlier this year. The money will be used to provide additional resources to the court to help it process priority cases and deal with the backlog. The press release issued by the court states that at the moment around 2,000 priority applications have been pending for more than one year. The donations from states are to be on a voluntary basis and the donor states may stipulate for what purpose the funds they are donating must be used.
