The Office of the Attorney General is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the positions of Advisory Counsel (Grade III). The role of Advisory Counsel is to assist and advise the Attorney General in carrying out his or her functions. It involves specialist advisory work in the fields of domestic, European and International law, participation in the formulation of legislation and legal policy, representing the State in international fora and advising on the conduct of litigation in which the State is involved.
This comprises a very wide range of legal topics including Constitutional, European, Administrative and Human Rights law. It involves giving legal advice to Government Departments and Offices in relation to all areas of public administration. The appointee must have experience of providing substantive legal opinion to a high level (without recourse to external expertise) and experience of advocacy in a court setting. The Office is unique amongst law practices due to the scope and variety of the work it undertakes. Advisory Counsel may be required to be available for secondment from time to time to other Government Departments or Offices.
The Office seeks Barristers or Solicitors with the ability and experience to analyse and advise on complex legal issues and who can demonstrate a good knowledge of Constitutional, European, Administrative and Human Rights law. The appointee must also have excellent communication skills, including the capacity to present legal issues clearly, both orally and in writing.
