The National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) will be exploring the theme of ‘Feminist Futures’ for its 2015 AGM. As Ireland is in a period of great social change, it is more important than ever to ensure any changes are built on feminist principles. What a feminist future would look like in practise will be discussed along with issues such as care work being valued equally to other forms of employment, an end to violence against women and reproductive rights for all women.
Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, will open the event. Mary McAuliffe, historian and expert in gender and social history, will speak on the importance of Ireland’s independence for women and how feminists fought for social change during this period. This will be followed by a discussion on feminism from Galway woman Emer O’Toole, a Guardian columnist and author of ‘Girls Will Be Girls’.
