The annual International Criminal Court Summer School runs this year from 19-23 June 2017 and includes intensive lectures by leading specialists on the subject as well as social activities.
Participants – including postgraduate students, legal professionals, scholars and NGO workers – are provided with a detailed working knowledge of the establishment of the Court, its structures and operations, and the applicable law.
Lectures also cover wider international criminal law, including genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, the crime of aggression, jurisdiction, fair trial rights, and rules of procedure and evidence.
The 2017 Summer School will include a special session on corporate crimes. Although the Court does not formally have jurisdiction over companies, the Office of the Prosecutor recently indicated an intention to focus on “the destruction of the environment, the illegal exploitation of natural resources or the illegal dispossession of land”.
With business often implicated in such activities, this special session will examine questions regarding prosecuting corporate actors before the ICC, with participants including Prof James Stewart (University of British Columbia), Dr Nadia Bernaz (Middlesex University) and Richard J Rogers (Global Diligence LLP).
