The PILS Project: Development Officer – deadline 28 January 2019

The PILS Project is currently recruiting for a Development Officer.

The PILS Project protects and promotes human rights and equality in Northern Ireland through the use of public interest litigation. It does this in a number of ways:

• It provides legal and financial support to its NGO and solicitor members to bring public interest cases that will have a positive impact on vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

• The Project facilitates co-ordination and information sharing among its members.

• It seeks to build capacity in civil society and legal firms to engage in public interest litigation.

• The Project also works to break down barriers to access to justice.

The Development Officer will work to secure improvements in the protection and promotion of human rights and equality in Northern Ireland. The post-holder will be the organisation’s key contact point, providing support for PILS members. They will be responsible for growing PILS’ membership base and maintaining strong links with existing members.

As part of their role, they will help build members’ capacity to use the law to affect change; will deal with queries on human rights and equality issues; will encourage dialogue and information sharing among PILS members; and will keep abreast of issues which would benefit from public interest litigation. They will lead the project’s legal education work and will assist with casework, fundraising and collaborative work.
The successful candidate will be a qualified solicitor or barrister, have at least 1 year’s work experience as a practising solicitor or barrister, excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and organisational skills.

The post is for 3 years (subject to funding) with a salary of £26,470 + 8% pension. (This is Point 29/SO1 on the current National Joint Council pay scale, widely used in the voluntary and community sectors.)
