Law Society of Ireland: Annual Human Rights Lecture on Justice and Addiction – 12 June

The lecture is brought to you by the Human Rights and Equality Committee in partnership with the Law Society Professional Training.

Aims and Objectives

This lecture will explore an innovative approach, pioneered in the United States of America, to tackling the serious and constantly occurring societal issue of drugs addiction. It will provide an insight on the intersection of drug policy and protection of human rights and is aimed at all those who might have an interest in human rights and who wish to gain an insight into this important aspect of the criminal justice system. The Law Society is honoured to have as a keynote speaker Honourable Judge Craig D. Hannah who presides over a Court which is recognised for a novel and pioneering approach in the manner in which it seeks to balance the rights of all stakeholders affected by crimes involving drug addiction issues.

Judge Ann Ryan, District Court and Special Criminal Court
Judge Ann Ryan is a Judge of the District Court since 2004. She has been involved with the Drug Treatment Court for nearly 10 years. She also is a Judge of the Special Criminal Court since 2013. Ann Ryan practised at the Bar for 18 years prior to her appointment and earlier in her career she graduated from University College Dublin with a degree in Science and worked as a clinical Biochemist. She has many interests outside her work.

Honourable Craig D. Hannah (Chief Judge, Buffalo City Court, Opioid Intervention Court, Buffalo, New York, USA)
The Honourable Craig D. Hannah is Chief Judge of Buffalo City Court and presides over the Court’s Opiate Intervention and Adolescent Diversion Division.  Judge Hannah has served on as a Judge since 2006 and also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the State University at Buffalo Law School where he lectures in Trial Advocacy and Procedure and is a member of the prestigious Franklin H. Williams’ Judicial Commission on Racial and Ethnic Fairness. Judge Hannah’s honours and achievements are numerous.  These awards, amongst others, include receiving the Outstanding Jurist Award by the NYS Bar Association (Criminal Section) and the Bar Association of Erie County.
