The UCD Human Rights Network is hosting an event, The Case for Marriage Equality, with keynote speakers Senator Katherine Zappone and Dr. Ann-Louise Gilligan. It will be followed by Q&A chaired by Dr. Maurice Manning.

Independent Senator Katherine Zappone has spent her life campaigning on social justice issues to ensure that everyone is treated equally with fairness and justice.In the Seanad she has championed human rights, gender equality, equality in education, financial justice and political reform.She is proud to be a former Commissioner with the Irish Human Rights Commission (2002-2012) and a former CEO of the National Women's Council of Ireland. Senator Zappone is co-founder of An Cosán, Ireland's largest community education with her spouse Dr. Ann Louise Gilligan. She has co-authored her memoirs with Dr Ann Louise Gilligan, Our Lives Out Loud: In Pursuit of Justice & Equality which documents their ground-breaking case to have their Canadian marriage recognised in Irish law. She holds a PhD from Boston College, an MBA from the Smurfit Business School and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from UCD School of Law.
Dr. Ann Louise Gilligan is a life-long educator and has worked in every level of state education, inclusive of adult and community education. Ann Louise is a former Senior Lecturer in the Education Department of St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra, and also founded the College's Centre for Educational Disadvantage, which focused its work on teacher training for the different educational needs of children growing up in areas marked by poverty. Dr. Gilligan was appointed by the Minister for Education to establish and Chair the National Educational Welfare Board. She has been appointed recently by the Minister for Education to the first Board of Quality and Qualifications Ireland. She co-founded An Cosan: A Centre of Learning, Leadership and Enterprise with Katherine, and co-authored their memoirs. Ann Louise's passion for justice and equality continues in her work on the YESEquality Campaign for Marriage Equality, and through her current research on wholistic supports for those who have suffered a brain injury. Ann Louise holds a PhD from Boston College.
