Events: Respond Certificate in Applied Social Studies

Respond is running a Certificate in Applied Social Studies, which is designed to introduce students to concepts of sociology and social studies and will do so with a particular focus on housing. It provides students with an understanding of housing policy, legislation and practice, an opportunity to practice skills necessary for housing and community work, core themes in social housing (including tenure types, tenant participation and housing finance), exploration of concepts of community and community development, an analysis of homelessness and an introduction to key legislation in this area. It also includes modules on interculturalism, communications and applied psychology.

The teaching styles used will be participatory and experiential and students will be encouraged to debate, analyse and reflect on the way in which society works. There will be a strong focus on applying theories to practice within the field of social studies (particularly community and voluntary sector organisations, housing associations and local authority structures) and this will be complemented by a work experience component. Learning will be assessed in a range of ways including group projects, written assignments and reflective journals.

The course will run on various dates between September 2010 and May 2011. The closing date for applications is 13 August 2010. Please contact caroline.nolan@respond.ie or 018087760 for enquiries and booking forms.
