National Disability Authority and the Economic and Social Research Institute Seminar on ‘Promoting Social Inclusion for people with disabilities: nation and European perspectives’, 21 September 2011

The Social Inclusion Division (SID) in the Department of Social Protection, the National Disability (NDA) and the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) are holding a half-day national seminar on Wednesday 21 September at the ESRI in Dublin.

Venue: ESRI, Whitaker Square, Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin 2.

Time: 9 - 1pm

Aims of the seminar:

  • Examine recent findings from national and European research on poverty and social exclusion among this group.
  • Provoke thought and debate on the factors contributing to these findings. As improving the social situation of people with disabilities is a key theme in the National Action Plan for Social Inclusion 2007-2016 and is also relevant to the Europe 2020 Strategy, the debate is timely and topical.
  • Provide a platform for the publication of findings from a new study by the ESRI, 'A Social Portrait of People with Disabilities in Ireland'. This research, commissioned by the SID, profiles the circumstances and life experiences of people with disabilities in Ireland, at various stages of the lifecycle. This study based on both reports of the National Disability Survey (CSO 2008 and 2010) is the first analysis of its kind in Ireland. This publication is the final in a series of five Social Portraits on the various lifecycle groups in Ireland, commissioned by the Department from the ESRI, a process which started in 2007.
  • Feature inputs from Irish and European experts and panel discussions with key stakeholders on the way forward. The opening address will be given by Joan Burton, TD, Minister for Social Protection.
