Turkey has highest number of ECHR violations in 2011

For the third year running, Turkey has had more violations of the European Convention of Human Rights than any other country.

Nicolas Bratza, head of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) commented recently that Turkey had 159 cases where it allegedly violated the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). However, the Turkish Justice Minister Sedat Ergin said that a series of reforms had been introduced in recent years to prevent human rights violations.

Turkey accepted the right of individuals to file applications with the ECtHR and in 1990 recognised the compulsory jurisdiction of the court. Despite this, Turkey has still not ratified some of the protocols contained in the Convention.
