Crosscare reports that Irish migrants to Britain are unaware of welfare rights

Crosscare Migrant Project, an information, referral and advocacy service for migrants, has published a report saying that Irish emigrants to Britain are unaware of their welfare rights once they leave Ireland.  The report is based on a survey of Irish emigrants queuing for Eurolines bus services from Busáras in Dublin to London or Leeds. 10 people were interviewed in detail and none of them had researched their entitlements to social welfare benefits or housing prior to departure.

The report notes that there is a risk in these situations that emigrants will not be prepared or adequately informed if they do find themselves in a situation of vulnerability. The report also recommended a joint British-Irish government campaign to inform new Irish emigrants of their entitlements in the UK.
