What is Community Mediation?

Community Mediation is based on three ideas:

  • That the best people to resolve a dispute are the people who are actually involved.
  • When communication has broken down, or when feelings are running high, it can be useful to have the help of an impartial outsider to find a way forward.
  • The mediator is a volunteer from a local community who believes that community is built by resolving local disputes one by one.
  • In mediation a trained mediator works with people involved in a conflict to help them hear each other’s concerns and decide on an agreement which is acceptable to all.

The Course is divided into a number of themes:

  • Conflict Resolution skills and your own style of handling conflict
  • The positive value of conflict
  • An introduction to the mediation process
  • Managing separate private meetings to prepare for the joint meeting
  • Managing a joint meeting involving the two disputants or other parties

Acceptance on to the course is subject to interview.
