PILA Legal Education Sessions on Data Protection and Defamation – 24 November & 1 December

PILA is hosting two legal education sessions for NGOs and community organisations in the coming months:

  • Data Protection – 12.30-2pm, Thursday 24 November in the offices of McCann Fitzgerald solicitors.

Law firm, McCann Fitzgerald, has developed a user friendly guide for the charity sector that will examine both the data protection obligations of organisations, as well as how to support individuals in accessing their personal data. The education session will launch this guide, by providing an overview of the existing legislation and rules.

The session may be of interest to organisations who would like to improve their service to clients, while implementing enhanced data protection standards.

The session will run from 12.30pm-2pm, with lunch served at 12.30pm.

  • Defamation – 9-11am, Thursday 1 December in the offices of Arthur Cox solicitors.

NGOs frequently undertake campaigning which may involve making statements on the activities and ethics of high-profile companies and politicians, on issues of a sensitive nature or that may illicit response from those who feel that their reputation has been damaged. In recent times, concerns of exposure to defamation actions have increased with the rising use of social media, such as posting on websites, Facebook and Twitter, which make it easier for people to commit defamation due to greater access to methods of publication.

This session is therefore intended to provide NGOs with an understanding of how to manage the risk of defamation, to enable them to pursue their organisational goals more effectively.
