FLAC Council and Staff are delighted to invite you to our FLAC@50 Access to Justice Conference in Association with the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin.

2019 is a special year for FLAC as the organisation marks its 50th anniversary. As part of its celebrations to mark this milestone, FLAC, in association with the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin, will host a major conference on access to justice on Friday 17 May 2019. This conference explores important themes in access to justice. It brings together a range of perspectives, national and international, on key challenges and opportunities.

While much has changed in the Irish legal system and Irish society since FLAC’s establishment in 1969, access to justice remains a critical challenge. There is a growing concern about access to justice and a growing consensus that major reform is required.  The Chief Justice who has committed to making access to justice a focus of his tenure will deliver the opening address. Access to justice has many dimensions. It requires access to an effective system of legal aid. There remain very serious and significant gaps in Ireland’s legal aid system, both in terms of the limited coverage of that system, which is defined by extensive exclusions, and in the strict requirements of financial eligibility. But access to justice also requires effective access to the law in the broadest sense, including access to the courts and access to effective remedies.  On a daily basis, FLAC encounters individuals who are trying to navigate the court system without legal representation and who struggle with inaccessible court forms, procedures and language

Attendance is free but as space is limited pre-registration is essential.
