Dr James Carr appointed as Ireland’s member of European anti-racism body

Dr James Carr has been appointed as Ireland’s member of the Council of Europe’s European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), following his nomination by Minister of State for Migration Colm Brophy.

ECRI is the Council of Europe’s independent human rights monitoring body specialising in issues relating to racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, antisemitism and intolerance across its member states.

Dr Carr is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Limerick and has previously worked with ECRI as a consultant adviser on General Policy Recommendations. He has also engaged with ECRI members in connection with the organisation’s sixth-cycle monitoring report on Ireland.

He has additionally worked with the European Commission as an expert adviser on anti-Muslim hatred and anti-racism. In Ireland, he is a member of the Advisory Committee on Racial Equality and Racism, which independently monitors implementation of the National Action Plan Against Racism.
