The Equal Rights Trust (ERT) is seeking a highly-qualified legal professional to fill the position of Legal Officer deadline 16 March 2012

The Equal Rights Trust (ERT) is an independent international organisation, whose purpose is to combat discrimination and promote equality as a fundamental human right and a basic principle of social justice. The Trust is seeking to appoint a Legal Officer to manage and participate in a variety of activities, including legal advocacy and research; drafting and editing of equality and human rights law reports, statements, papers and educational materials; providing training on equality and human rights law; providing legal guidance to various country and thematic projects; and helping compile and edit the Trust's biannual journal, The Equal Rights Review. This is a full time appointment. The post is based in London.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages specific legal research, advocacy, policy, education/training projects in implementation of the Plan of Action of the Trust;
  • Participates in the fundraising efforts of the Trust through drafting applications or assisting with elements of developing applications as necessary;
  • Designs and implements training components of capacity building projects in equality law and human rights law;
  • Oversees and coordinates the work of external consultants and overseas partners;

Qualification and expertise required:

  • An LLB or equivalent, plus a post-graduate degree in a field related to law or human rights;
  • Expertise in equality law, with thorough knowledge of the national equality legislation and policies of at least one country;
  • Expertise in international human rights law;
  • Experience in legal research;
  • Excellent writing skills in English;

Desirable:

  • Website development skills and/or website content management skills;
  • Fluency in one or more UN languages;
  • Specialisation on an area within equality law or human rights.
