Immigrant Council of Ireland & AkiDwA Event on Migrant Women - 28 June, Dublin

"Migrant Women need Choices not Exploitation: Protecting migrant women from sex trafficking and prostitution, and presenting them with real alternatives"

Date: Thursday, 28 June
Time: 2pm to 4.30pm
Venue: Irish Aid Volunteering and Information, 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1

Migrant women constitute approximately 97 per cent of those involved in prostitution in Ireland.  The Immigrant Council of Ireland and AkiDwA believe prostitution is not a legitimate choice for women.  This seminar will explore how to protect vulnerable migrant women from exploitation in the sex industry, and how to present them with legitimate alternative options.
The event will be addressed by:

  • Joe Costello TD, Minister of State for Trade and Development.
  • Rossi Yaneva, an expert with the Human Trafficking Commission in Bulgaria and the Director of Bourgas shelter for survivors of prostitution.
  • Denise Charlton, CEO of the Immigrant Council of Ireland.
  • Salome Mbugua, CEO of AkiDwA.

The Immigrant Council of Ireland and AkiDwA are leading members of the Turn Off the Red Light campaign, which lobbies for the end of sex trafficking and prostitution.
