Immigrant Council of Ireland: Campaigns and Advocacy Officer – deadline 19 February 2018

The Immigrant Council of Ireland is a non-governmental organisation and Independent Law Centre which provides information, advice and legal representation to migrants and their families moving to or living in Ireland. The Immigrant Council’s aim is to directly assist migrants in navigating the Irish immigration system and, in turn, the organisation uses its experience and expertise to lobby for positive policy and legislative changes within the immigration system and associated areas.

The Immigrant Council of Ireland is currently seeking applications for the following position:

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title of position: Campaigns and Advocacy Officer
Reporting to
: Communications and Advocacy Manager
Location: 2 St Andrew St, Dublin 2

This is a 12 month, part-time role (4 days per week), and subject to funding. A 6 month probationary period applies.

Purpose of position

The Immigrant Council of Ireland is recruiting a Campaigns and Advocacy Officer to assist in the delivery of the organisation’s key goals, in line with its strategic plan.

As part of the communications and advocacy team, the Campaigns and Advocacy Officer will have a working knowledge of Irish politics and the media landscape, and the institutions of the European Union. A passion for social justice and particularly migrants’ rights is essential. Experience in a communications, campaigns or lobbying role would be advantageous.

The Campaigns and Advocacy Officer will have top-notch organisational and communications skills, and be a strong networker with the ability to engage with partner organisations, policymakers, politicians and the media.

A key function of this role is to assist in the development of strategic advocacy and communications activities and materials, to help achieve the Immigrant Council’s organisational goals. A clear allegiance to the principles and values of the organisation is essential. Digital and design skills are highly desirable.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • To assist in the coordination of the Immigrant Council of Ireland’s campaign and advocacy work and the development of associated strategic approaches
  • To assist in the coordination of relevant campaigns, events and meetings, taking the lead where appropriate
  • To generate multimedia content for digital and printed materials in support of the Immigrant Council’s strategic goals
  • To help maintain the Immigrant Council’s social media platforms
  • To help update the Immigrant Council of Ireland’s website
  • To help coordinate and project manage Immigrant Council events, including press conferences, report launches, seminars and briefings
  • To assist in identifying and advancing media opportunities for the Immigrant Council
  • To assist in political lobbying, including preparation of briefing materials and liaison
  • To assist in the preparation of media materials relating to the Immigrant Council
  • To liaise with partners working with the Immigrant Council on its campaigns
  • To help monitor all Immigrant Council media and to archive same
  • To support internal communications processes within the organisation
  • To liaise with external bodies as appropriate
  • To assist in administrative duties as required
  • To assist in other duties as the post requires

The post holder will be expected to attend work-related meetings, to implement actions agreed at these meetings where appropriate and to work, as required, some weekends and evenings which will be compensated with time off in lieu.

Person Specification:

Qualifications and education/training:

  • An appropriate third-level qualification or equivalent experience.

  • Familiarity with a human rights based approach and equality analysis
